No, Louisiana prohibits online casinos using real money. It is however possible for Louisianians to play at sweepstakes/social casinos. There are options to play either for free or with coins redeemable for prizes and real currency.
The state of Louisiana has legalized online sports betting, and allows several other alternatives to traditional gambling.
- Online sports betting ✅
- Daily fantasy sports & pick'em sites ✅
- Social casinos & sportsbooks (not sweepstakes) ✅
- Prediction markets (without sports contracts) ✅
An important note is that prediction markets in Louisiana are not legally allowed to sell contracts on sports, as this closely resembles betting according to lawmakers.
In addition, while social operators (without prizes and dual-currency systems) are still legal, as of 2026, sweepstakes operators with real-money prizes and dual-currency systems are no longer legal.
Louisiana is the only U.S. state that does not implement a state-wide gambling law. Instead, the decision was left up to the voters in every state. If you are physically located in a parish that voted no, the sportsbook's geolocation will prevent you from placing wagers - even if your permanent residence is in a legal parish.

Louisiana has a very strict 21+ policy on most forms of gambling. This includes land based tribal casinos, online sports betting, slots, video poker and the state lottery. This also includes social casinos, prediction markets and fantasy sites, even though they normally require 18+ in other states.
The exceptions to the rule are horse racing, where players can place pari-mutuel bets, and charity games such as bingo and raffles, which are available from 18+.
Louisiana does not allow real-money online casinos, which means that you can't just visit a website, deposit a few bucks and play video poker on the internet.
It is however possible to play casino games (including video poker) on social casinos operating under the sweepstakes model. This means using virtual currency such as coins or tokens, but in some cases they might be redeemable for prizes and real money.
Yes, winnings from online sports betting and other forms of gambling are considered taxable income in Louisiana. Since 2025, the rate is a flat 3%, and some sportsbooks may withhold the amount at the time of payout. Non-residents gambling in LA will have to submit a non-resident tax return.
In addition to LA state tax, federal taxes also apply, and gambling winnings must be submitted as taxable income. Bigger wins usually leads to the sportsbook sending out a W-2G Form to be filled out and sent in.
Louisiana Sportsbook Promos Explained
Since legalizing online sportsbooks, a growing market of Louisiana sports betting promos have flooded the market. As a beginner, it might be tricky to tell them apart. In addition, legislations are often amended and updated, leading to frequent changes in trends and availability. Sportsbook bonuses you might encounter include:
- Sign-Up Bonuses: A good old classic welcome offer. Join the sportsbook, verify your account and make your very first deposit to redeem it.
- Bonus Bets: Place a qualifying bet, and after the turnout is decided you'll receive a pre-paid bet from the sportsbook to place on whatever you want.
- No Sweat Bets: Place a qualifying bet. If it loses, the sportsbook compensates you with a second chance bet to use freely on their site.
- Bet Get Bonuses: As simple as it sounds, place a bet to get rewarded with a specifically stated amount or Bonus Bet from the sportsbook.
- Referral Bonuses: Many betting sites have a referral program, with which you can recruit your friends to get you both rewarded with bonus funds.
- Promo Codes: Particularly common during big sporting events. Keep an eye on social medias (or our news!) to find out the latest codes to redeem.
- Special sportsbook promotions: Betting sites frequently offer special promotions that could mean anything from free Profit Boosts and Odds Boosts to temporary welcome sign-up offers. These promotions often run a limited time, so you might want to pick them up quickly when you spot them.
While these are the most common ways in which these sports betting bonuses work, offers may differ depending on the sportsbook and specific bonus. We always recommend that our visitors read the terms and conditions attached to the sportsbooks and their bonuses.
Sportsbook Bonuses/Promos/Offers NOT allowed
- Risk-Free Bets and Free Bets: Long-term bettors might have noticed that these offers completely disappeared from the market a few years back. The reason is that they were deemed misleading marketing. Similar bonuses still exist in Louisiana, but nowadays free bets must be referred to as Bonus Bets, and risk-free bets as No Sweat Bets or Second Chance Bets.
- College Sports Marketing: Betting on college sports teams (like the LSU moneyline or point spread) is completely legal and very popular. However, Louisiana has strictly banned college player prop bets to protect amateur athletes from harassment, meaning you cannot bet on individual player statistics. Due to early controversies in the state, sportsbooks are also strictly prohibited from forming marketing partnerships with universities or offering promotions targeted specifically at college campuses.
- Sweepstakes: Louisiana has taken a strict stance against sweepstakes brands, operators and promotions. This refers specifically to apps and websites where bettors can use dual-currency systems and win real-money prizes.
- Sports Contracts: After much debate and legal procedures, it was decided in 2026 that Prediction Markets will continue to be allowed in Louisiana, with an important caveat: they are not allowed to sell contracts on sporting events.
Maximizing Your Louisiana Betting Promos
If you want to get the most bang for your buck, here are the golden rules to keep in mind when shopping for Louisiana sportsbook bonuses.
Shop Around: You're not limited to one sportsbook, and often times, the loyalty programs and rewards given to faithful customers are simply not good enough - at least not compared with a brand new welcome offer. If you want to max out your bankroll and be sure to get the best odds available, claiming multiple sign-up bonuses and checking different sportsbooks on matchday is a pro move.
Mark Your Calendar: The biggest Odds Boosts, biggest free Profit Boosts, and most lucrative bonus codes are handed out during and right before major events like the Super Bowl or March Madness. Even if you don't watch the specific sport, the offers are sometimes usable on any market in the sportsbook.
Watch the Expiration Date: Much like milk, there comes a day when your sports bonus is no good anymore. A common mistake among newbies on the betting scene is to claim an offer and save it for a great game. But all promos have an expiration date, usually 7-14 days for betting bonuses, but sometimes as little as 24 hours for Bonus Bets. Set a reminder on your phone if you really want to hold on to it for as long as possible.
Betting in Louisiana While from Another State
Louisiana is known as the "Vegas of the South", and every year visitors from all over the U.S. come to gamble at the local casinos, riverboats and racinos. This freedom and hospitality also includes online betting, and non-residents too are welcome to grab a Louisiana sportsbook promo at one of the locally available brands - as long as you are physically located in one of the 55 legal parishes!
Keep in mind that while gambling in Louisiana as a visitor, you will have to submit a non-resident Form IT-540B, which is subjected to the standard flat rate of 3%. You also have to report your potential winnings on your regular tax return, and depending on your state of residency, you may have to tax winnings in your home-state. Many states offer credits to avoid double taxation.
