What are Social Sportsbooks?

To summarize it in one sentence, social sportsbooks are free-to-play simulations of traditional sportsbooks, with an added social element. These sweepstakes sportsbooks are free to join and uses virtual coins or tokens when placing wagers, and all potential use of real currency is completely optional. But the biggest difference is the social aspect.

Social betting platforms is all about fun and community. Players can befriend each other, join leagues together, chat, write on forums, compete on leaderboards and sometimes even share or copy other players' bets. A very common and popular feature is daily community challenges, where players compete for points and prizes.

According the US law, there are three main elements that when put together defines gambling. The sweepstakes model takes advantage of this by simply removing one of the three elements, essentially making their sites or apps legal. The three elements of gambling are:

  1. Consideration - The player pays or risks a stake to take part.
  2. Chance - The outcome is based on luck, not skill.
  3. Prize - The player can win something of real value.

The element that is removed is "consideration", as social sportsbooks do not require players to deposit or wager real money to take part. Instead, virtual tokens or coins, is used as the standard currency. Some social sportsbooks do however offer real-money gambling as an optional alternative in states where this is allowed.

Can you win real money on Social Sportsbooks?

Yes, many social sportsbooks offer players the opportunity to win real money. The way this works depends on the operator and local state regulations. Common ways in which players can win real money on social sportsbooks include:

  • Claiming coins from daily promotions
  • Claiming coins from giveaways
  • Getting free coins through social media/email sendouts
  • Betting sweepcoins to earn withdrawable currency
  • Buying sweepcoins to get free withdrawable coins
  • Redeeming cash prizes from your virtual currency

Some platforms let players buy virtual coins, and includes a free gift of a secondary type of coin with the purchase. These secondary coins can either be used to play, or withdrawn as real currency. A few platforms also offer real-money wagering, but only in states where traditional betting is legal. Users can often claim betting bonuses based on virtual currency when signing up.

In what states are Social Sportsbooks legal?

Most US states allow social sportsbooks operating under the sweepstakes model. But there are some notable exceptions that have limited or straight up banned all social- and sweepstakes operators.

States limiting social sportsbooks and sweepstakes:

  • California (no prize redemption)
  • Hawaii (free-to-play only)
  • Idaho (social sportsbooks are illegal)
  • Nevada (free-to-play only)
  • New York (moving to outlaw sweepstakes)
  • Tennessee (no cash prizes allowed)
  • Washington (no cash prizes or gift cards)

Keep in mind that legislations can sometimes change quickly. We recommend our visitors to always double check the current status in their state of residency before playing.
